Time Machine is nothing like System Restore. Time Machine allows you to find multiple previous versions of a file. For example, if you accidentally save a revised file without changing the name with "Save As", you can still go back to the previous version of the file if you decide you don't like the revisions or if a file is lost or damaged...

Time Machine reminds me a little bit about how MS-Word allows "Quick Saves" to documents: what it basically does is leave the original file alone, but then appends the incremental changes to the end of the file. It makes saving the file faster, at the expense of making the file slower to load (and larger).

From here, its not too much of a leap. Simply:
    a) Take what MS had had for years and make it crash-proof
    b) Extend it from one Application to be supported System wide.

Now if Apple can only beat MS out of the gate on the release date...

They could do ads like this:

    (Cue I'm a Mac/I'm a PC music.)
    Mac: Hello, I'm a Mac.
    PC: And I'm a PC.
Mac: You know, I'm really excited, I have this new operating system called Leopard...
PC: Oh yes, I 'm going to have a new operating system too, called Vista...sometime soon...I think...well, at least there's an 80% chance I will...
    Mac: That's great! ...

Personally, I don't think that's going to be Apple's strategy: I think Steve's laying the groundwork for a big "Mindshare" grab by raising the bar right after Vista finally ships.

    (Cue I'm a Mac/I'm a PC music.)

    Mac: Hello, I'm a Mac.
    PC: And I'm a PC.

Mac: Hey, congratuations - Vista has finally shipped!

PC: Well, thanks. As you see, I can now do this...
Mac: Yeah, I had that last year (Tiger)

PC: And I can now also do this...
Mac: That's really great (2004; Panther)

PC: And I can now also do this...
Mac: And its about time (2003; Jaguar)

PC: so I now just about have everything Apple said it would give you when it previewed your new OS five months ago.

Mac: yeah, well now that Vista's shipped, we no longer have to worry about being too distracting to Vista's developers.

    PC: you, distracting?
Mac: Uh, yeah. I mean, you really, really, needed a more secure OS.

PC: Gosh, you can say that again. But...distracting?

Mac: Well, we didn't exactly announce everything we shipped. Ever heard of "One More Thing"? (insert mind-blowing new features here).

    PC: That's not in Vista.

Mac: Oh, and this stuff has already shipped too...its included -free- in Leopard. Mac users just need to do a "Software Update" to get it activated.

PC: you know, come to think of it, I haven't opened that Vista upgrade yet, so I can still return it. And my hardware is getting pretty old. Hey Mac, think you might be able to help me pick out a new machine?

Mac: Have you been to 5th Avenue in New York recently...?

BEST BUY does not have the ipad on stock. The program they launched today - from their ad is you have to go to the store and pay $100 for a deposit so you can order a unit. They do not have any units on stock. You might as well go directly to apple.com and order from them.

They put the ipad on their front ads but do not have even a single unit on stock. Everyone waiting in line this morning here was disappointed at our local Best Buy store.

So... will that trick of making a 8GB 1G nano work with these....

remember... open up a nano and u'll see a free slot. Cause, I could go for a 12GB Green..... 16GB black would be ok... but green... color of envy... color of desire... color of money....

12GB Green would be highly desired!

Id also like to add that I increased spending on veterans, so you can save the "you don't support the troops" crap, I dont want to hear it.

The funny thing is that our current war spending doesn't put anything aside or even factor in the serious cash we're gonna have to drop on veteran benefits down the road. Thats a huge unaccounted for money pit, that MUST be paid for.

I just bought a Macbook Pro literally 5 minutes ago. I've been waiting for months and I finally gave up. After the order was completed, I thought I'd check macrumors just for laughs and the first thing I saw was, "new macbook pros tomorrow?" :(

Relax and enjoy your machine...at most, it's gonna be a speed bump and some new ports, nothing else...not to mention that so far, only hoaxes have published around. I figure Apple is gonna take a while to launch the new MBPs this time...

Last I checked this kind of anti-competitive action was illegal under monopoly laws...

you might be right...wasn't MS hit with something similar? It's not fair for a distributor to threaten the product producer (OMG..that is bad english, but you know what i mean).

i actually think it's funny b/c the studios don't like to be told what to do by anyone. if using Apple helps distribute their products, i highly doubt they'll listen to wal-mart or anyone for that matter.

it would be interesting to know whether or not WM has specific distribution deals with studios which has language indicating the studios can't distribute.

in the end, it just looks pathetically whiny by WM to cry about this. "OH..we can't sell online so nobody else is allowed...that's not fair." blah blah boo hoo.

    losers.

    cheers,
    Keebler

Or if they do make it some outrageous price above that for the 23" iMac, might as well throw in a blu-ray drive right? ;) But that's probably still a ways off seeing how much external drives cost currently, probably more a MacWorld '07 announcement.

    B. I can be bothered.

Oh and i'm well over 18, have a very high IQ and a masters degree. :) That doesn't make me any more likely to be right or wrong than you, i'm just saying, seeing as you made some delightful comments about 13 and under 18 year olds in your aforementioned post.

If you guys don't mind Apple being behind in hardware, then, quite honestly, stop whining about it.

So many Mac users spend hours a day, talking about Apple and what they're doing wrong, but never take any action. If those who care about Apple being the slowest computers on the market are not going to do something about it, then they should shut up about it.

If you're going to whine about it constantly and then get upset with someone who says it's not good enough, then you're just a stupid hypocrit. I realize that you're happy with the productivity your Mac(s) has brought you, and are incredibly loyal to Apple, as well you should be, but if you're going to complain about it, then at least make some attempt to do something about it. or shut up about it.

    Just a quickie:
I'm not whining about anything. I think of Macs as entry level workstations (not as desktops), and as such, I find them cheap, reliable, and speedy.

I'd like more speed (as I do tax my machine), but I'm not known to whine about anything. If you'll notice, my post is very point/counterpoint, and primarily designed to dispel some of the myths proffered from either side of the fence. If you read it carefully, I think you'll see that I'm neither a hypocrite, nor stupid. My spelling and grammar are strong. My arguments and points are logical, and put forth based on data, published and empirical.

Note I was quick to agree that Macs are not the fastest machines...

Secondly, Macs are not the slowest machines on the market. For processing only arguments, the Mac line sits squarely between the top and bottom end Windows machines. For reliability (uptime, TCO), the Mac sits between more mature UNIX distros, and Windows.

As for age, there are a lot of people here in the 12-20 demographic, who agrue with zeal, but without fact. Oddly, it is this demographic which are most likely to buy neon case lights, watercoolers, billet milled aircraft aluminum cases, etc.

No need to take the vertical demographics as an insult!

Furthermore, what action do you propose we comsumers take to speed Apple development?

I would wager that no active posters have high level chip design on their resumes. I would further speculate that few really understand the in-and-outs of a complex gate setup, so I doubt we're going to design it for them.

Should we boycott Apple products? This drains R&D capital from Apple, and forces people to use Windows, certainly not an elegant soultion.

I am open to any suggestion you have as to how I can speed the delivery of a G5 or Power4 Lite.

Lastly, I'm a happy Apple customer, but my loyalty is available. If you can create a better matrix of performance/stability/standards based computing/availabilty of apps/cost/TCO/OS elegance I'm a customer.

Well my MB was bought the day they were announced - my local Apple store didn't have them on display yet :) and mine hasn't had the shutdown issue.

Same here. Got a black one the day of release from apple store and have not had a single problem. I guess that was the only good batch.

Nice, but not essential. I usually have the patience to wait until I'm home to install an update. Unless it's an iOS update..

More important to me is over-the-air syncing. That would be a killer!

Each Sunday I'm going to try to take a wide angle shot of some of the more interesting rooms in my church. The main building was an old mansion with some pretty interesting architecture. Some of the rooms have murals along the tops of the walls. This one is the basement which was a summer parlor and decorated as an English tavern. Those are beer drinking carvings on either side. The floor is Venetian tile.

I could type up a bunch of stuff, but this website (http://www.godandscience.org/apologetics/triunity.html) does a good job of covering all the bases regarding our difference of opinion on this matter. Here's two quick excerpts:.The link you give contains:
The Hebrew word translated "God" is the word El or Elohim. Elohim is the plural form of El. The plural form is used 2607 of the 2845 times the word "God" is used in the Old Testament. Not only is the word for God usually used in the plural form, but several verses refer to God as "Us":
    • Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." (Genesis 1:26)
    • Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, lest he stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"-- (Genesis 3:22)
    • "Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." (Genesis 11:7)
    • Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I. Send me!" (Isaiah 6:8)
An example of how the Hebrew word Elohim is used in the plural is that it is translated "gods" (referring to idols) 235 times in the Old Testament. It is exactly the same word that is translated "God," referring to the Almighty. An example is given below:
"I am the LORD your God [Elohim], who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. "You shall have no other gods [Elohim] before Me. (Exodus 20:2-3)This seems far more likely to be referring to a literal plurality of gods than some revisionist gestalt. Occam's Razor would come down on the side of plain old-fashioned polytheism every single time.

    As for this:
Finally, there are a number of verses in the Old Testament in which the triunity of God is directly expressed:
    • Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His Son's name? Surely you know! (Proverbs 30:4)Yes, we do know his son's name: it was Baal. Every Canaanite knew that.

Where is my 2 lb Apple laptop? Sony has one. Panasonic has one.

My prediction: Apple will eventually come out with a 10.6" widescreen "MacBook mini". I think it'll more like 3 lbs, not 2 lbs, though, since that Sony laptop does not have an optical drive. I hope Apple doesn't do away with the optical drive (and I don't think they will), since I think that being a portable DVD player is really a core function of laptops at this point, at least a multimedia and consumer centered laptop (which a MacBook mini would be).

I've seen the Fujitsu 10.6" LifeBook laptops with built-in optical drive and they are sweeeeeeeeeeeet!:

    http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=6170351&srccode=cii_5784816&cpncode=10-28291577-2

One thing about the Fujitsu computers though - they are *expensive* (about $2000). Since Apple is one of the best companies in the world at making very compact products, maybe they can release a game-changing computer in this category. I mean, what if Apple were to basically release the MacBook, just with a smaller screen - and for about the same price as the MacBook!! Apple would have a monster hit on its hands, IMHO. It would be extremely popular with a lot of customers, but especially with students that are already carrying already heavy books, etc. in their bookbags, and would love a lighter, more compact computer...
