I'm not sure about novels but I would love to be able to read articles from Time, Wired, New Yorker et cetera on my iPod. In the past I've copied them from the web and transferred them into a 'note' file for viewing on my iPod. However I'd love to be able to download them from iTunes like a podcast. 99 cents wouldn't be un-reasonable if it's a well written article and it's advertisement free.

I think this would be great - I already read news articles on my 3G phone, and the iPod screen is bigger than that. Novels? No thanks.

Syncing today's news to my iPod in the morning to read on the way to work sounds great. No need for pesky slow download from a 3G network, or fiddly applescripts to download a website to notes on the iPod (sure someone would suggest it - sounds pretty awful to me!).

They did show Costco the door and for a long time I did not see any Apple products at my local Costco. Recently, I saw iPod touches but there was a sign that the warranty is provided through Costco and not Apple as Costco is not an authorized dealer.

Old timer here, I still have a first gen iPod. The kind with a mechanical jog wheel...

What you're all forgetting is that, before the iPod, MP3 players were either the size of a Diskman (remember those), or only held 16 songs. The iPod was entering a market that didn't exist, and it was also the first iProduct Apple Computer Inc released. Nobody expected it, nobody cared about it.

You still see the same attitude on these boards, when someone says "I don't care about the iPad 2, I just want my Core i7 MBP!" There's no difference, except now we've seen that iProducts do sell, and don't laugh them off so easily...

You can't tell me you wouldn't laugh and make the same sort of comments if Apple released a clothing line. ;)

Apple is primarily an American company and they know that the news cycle will be heavy with Election Results. They can wait until next week and get more bang for the same buck. Europe (Australia, Asia, etc. ) will be just as happy with a Nov. 14 release as Nov. 7.

My response was more tongue in cheek - knowing full well the US-Centricity of Apple.

i agree that the banner is made of all current products, but with the larger Power Mac case it worries me that there will not be a redesign this time around for the casing :(

Just because some are successful does not mean all can be. There is plenty of racism still around in most countries, and yes it does effect the less off more than those that are well off.

This is a bogus excuse. Racism goes both ways.

Because Blacks are not all the same. You cant lump people of one race all in one group and expect them to all to have the same results. There is a history in the US of racism that still effects many black Americans. Many black Americans can't afford to go to college for example. Poverty is a vicious cycle that preys on its self.

I know for a fact, if someone tries hard and gets decent grades, they can go to college in the US. I also know a person can pull them self out of poverty, with out college.

Poverty - look up computer ownership by race. Look up access to books, education, nutritional information etc by race.

Schools, churches, and libraries all have computers and books. There are several nutritional programs for the poor. most of the time they are abused, and it is spent on garbage, or sold for $.50 on the dollar.

Maybe it's time to upgrade the screen size to get more under the hood (and stick the antenna back in there).
    Precisely.

I hope they widen it by 2mm so there's room for a modest bezel, instead of that ultra thin example seen a short while ago. There's got to be a little room for a case to overlap the front edges a bit.

If they put the antenna back inside, then the case edges can be shaped for style and comfort. The iPhone 4's edges are just too plain looking. Other than proving they could make a fragile glass phone, it's a pain to hold securely if you're active.

I truly believe this could be a significant upgrade over the 4 if Apples willing to put out the effort.

Just look at the terrific job they did with the new MBA's. If they put the same effort into the next iPhone it will be an incredible model that will get lots of positive press.

i LOVE them! they're by far the best headphones i've ever had, although the bass does seem kind of exaggerated at times but this is perfect for me as i love lots of bass. the sound leak isn't too bad unless you're playing them at full volume but because of the sound isolation you never really need to turn it up all that much.

If you think the stereo mixes are good, you NEED to find a copy of the mono mixes. They are much better, and much more in keeping with the original vision of the songs. The Beatles (and Martin/Emerick/others) largely ignored the stereo mixes until the late 60s' because it wasn't a popular format. In some cases, the mono mixes are drastically different than the stereo. And THAT was the way the songs were originally intended.

The word "remix" has taken on a bad connotation lately. The songs shouldn't be "rearranged" (as is the common understanding of "remix"), but the actual elements need re-balancing, mostly in the area of placement in the stereo field (as others have pointed out). Plus the actual sonic quality of the CDs is poor, and the mixes, as they stand today, need to be remastered in higher quality digital.

    I agree and disagree.
agree that the mono mixes are better. but leave the stereo ones alone. they can remaster them if they want... but I dont think the actual mixes should be messed with. I certainly dont trust Sir Paul to be sitting in front of the mixing console saying to George martin "hey, can we turn up the sap?" if all the beatles were alive, maybe. but I'd rather them release the albums with both Stereo and mono mixes on them. like Beach boys did with Pet sounds (and its still only 12.99)

You can already get a MB with more RAM and larger HDD so what would be the point of that? A 13 inch MBP would make more sense.

Because you can't get a MacBook with a core 2 duo. Doh!

That's the whole point (of the thread actually)

Or just expand it to 2-3 weeks and repeat the event so all can come who want to. I am sure Apple wouldn't mind making a few million more off the event

They bring in about 7.5 million. Sounds like a lot, right? Let's look at it.

Figure about 1000 employees supporting it. Remember there will be offsite support as well. Average cost is about $150,000/year. For 1 week. There goes 2.8 million.

Now, these things do not prep overnight. In fact, employees are already starting the planning on the sessions. My guess is you will have another 2000 employes prepping for 40-80 hours over the next 10 weeks. There goes another.. we will say.. what... 4.5 million. We are 7.3 and we still don't have the Moscone center rented for a week. Lost productivity. Work interruption...

The following is just me personal guesses as too updates to Apples hardware over the next 6 months or so, with a few coming on the 12th and most by the end of the year.

MacBook Pros updated to Core 2 Duos is a no brainer, though I'm not sure if they'd launch it at such and event, but still possible since it is a bit more than speed bump, and you know Steve would want to brag about his new 64-bit PowerBooks.

Also, the iMacs seem to be in the same boat processor wise, though which Core 2 Duo isn't quite as obvious of a choice. If they could fit a G5 in the form factor, it seems reasonable that they could get Conroe in there too, but Merom would let it run cooler. Considering the large gap between the Mac mini and Mac Pro, a 23" iMac would just make sense, unless the much hoped for Conroe based mid tower was released, though that a lot less likely than a 23" iMac, or even a 30" iMac, so don't hold your breath.

MacBooks, don't hold your breath, possibly price drops to get it to $999 again since Yonah prices have come down since launch, but don't expect a Core 2 Duo any time soon. The MacBook is already eating the MacBook Pro's launch due to the similar specs, so the Core 2 is likely to be the MacBook Pro advantage.

Like the MacBook, the Mac mini could see drops back down to G4 levels, and I would discount the Core Duos across the line, but again, don't look for the Core 2 Duo anytime soon.

As for iPods, I would expect the touch screen Video iPod to come out in time for the holiday season, though maybe not on the 12th. The reason being to compete with the Zune and the fact that there finally seems to be a deal about a movie store. As for the regular iPod, probably 40GB and 80GB versions at the current prices, with a slim chance at a 60GB model at $349. As for the nano, probably doubling of storage on all models(2GB, 4GB, 8GB) at the same price points. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 1GB nano at around $129 either. As for the shuffle, if it survives, 512MB at $49 and 1GB at around $79 or so.

    Thats no true.

Apple just a few days ago released Mac OS X 10.6.7 and was only 475MB, and the Combo update was only 1.12GB. Mac OS X 10.6.6 brought the Mac App Store and was only 143MB.

I don't know why your updates are 4GB.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to apps purchased in the Mac AppStore, not the OS itself.

It's not an issue in other black communities, for instance Kenya, or Nigeria, or many others including Zuid Afrika.

You really think less than 50% of gun violence is committed by black men in those countries? You might want to go look at the demographics of those countries.

Why does gun violence effect the black communities? Prejudice, poverty and lack of access to societal goods others have among many other reasons.

PS: your "joke" is racist and not a joke. Not only is your premiss racist its sexist as well. One does not need positive roll models of both sexist to be non-violent, one needs love and acceptance.

That's unfortunate, but not sure what that has to do with people whining about something they won't do themselves.

A couple years ago, 4G meant LTE. Now it means HSPA+. I have no doubt that the next iPhone will be 4G capable, but it won't be LTE. I doubt that delaying the typical launch would have anything to do with including 4G.

Ummm.... I was of the impression that in a couple of markets People tried to promote HSPA+ as 4G and got smacked. Pretty much 4G must be a true 4G tech like LTE to use the name.

Hey I can see 4G/LTE as something Apple will want to get on early. I mean it's a big fat pipe technology. So no more one pipe for digital voice one for digital data.

*Sigh* One more reason to hate Wal-Mart. My wife and I stopped shopping there ages ago after talking to some of their workers (and comfirming for ourselves that the stories about forced, unpaid overtime and never-quite-materializing benefits were true) and reading about some of their business practices--much of which makes Microsoft look reasonably benign by comparison.

This kind of anti-competitive junk is exactly what we should all expect from Wal-Mart.

On a side note, I love how conservatives hold Wal-Mart up as a shining examples of American capitalism in action, but they fail to mention these kinds of practices. Making threats to keep others from entering your market is NOT how capitalism works. It's all supposed to be about competition and rising to meet your competitor's services or products. This frantic, behind-the-scenes threat-making is ridiculous and Wal-Mart should be ashamed.

I think Mac sales are directly tied to the Halo affect of the iOS devices. The more they sell there, the more people open up to Mac as an alternative. With Lion having more iOS like interfaces, it will make it even more natural for new customers.

IMO it's a combination of many things.

Yes, the idevices, but then comes word of mouth. Nothing is more powerful than when you have a friend or colleague who shows you how easily everything works and integrates.

The learning curve of a Mac is also not steep.

Overall I think the market for non professional users will shift away from desktop machines as the "books" become more and more powerful.

    Plus their new advertising slogan

All you need is a Mac and you'll never go back!
