While for me, $500 is a "pretty big wad of cash to throw down", there's more to it than strictly looking at the dollar figure. EG. Do you have a kid or kids that might benefit from being able to use the new iPad you're about to purchase? Do you have legitimate uses for it that go along with EARNING more money, or maybe even the ability to write the whole purchase off as a tax deduction the next year? When you spend $20 on some beer or a few bucks on some food, it's a consumable you use once and throw some trash away, and then you have nothing to show for it.

One thing I know about myself is, I'm very hesitant to spend much on "instant gratification" type of entertainment. I practically never spend money on tickets for sporting events or concerts, and maybe buy a movie ticket once a year. I've often skipped summer vacations completely because my employer didn't want me to take time off when they had important projects going on, and I just opted to get paid for the days instead. I don't even have cable or satellite TV at home, because I hated watching $60 or more per month just vanish into thin air, with nothing concrete to show for it later. So when I do spend my money? It tends to be on bigger-ticket items I know I'll get a lot of use out of for years down the road.

So frankly, in my relationships, "respect" is just as much about my partner respecting my ability to make sensible purchasing decisions and NOT demand I consult with her first, simply because it's something a lot more expensive than a fast food order.

Great post, completely agree, and am also inline with your mentality about spending money. The same people who ask me why the hell I would spent $1700 on a laptop when I can get one for $700 (I have a Macbook Pro, which I use several hours EVERY SINGLE DAY, will last years, and which I work and make money from) are the same people who would spend that difference in a month on stupid ****, eating out, and alcohol, with nothing to show for it. I have no problem spending more on long term purchases to get a better product, or something I'm passionate about which will bring me pleasure for a long time.

I could care less about the Beatles, but if this means the whole "Apple" issue is amicably and finally resolved, then I think it's outstanding. :)

Do you mean "couldn't care less", because otherwise your post is pretty confusing.

I'm not a big Beatles fan, but I'd probably buy 1 or 2 songs if they put em on iTunes. Even so, I think this would be a deal maker for a lot of people. Especially if they come out with a Beatles branded iPod.

How much time does it take to switch between OS's when using Parallels?
You're switching to an open window running Windows. It's instant.

It's really about the same as a Remote Desktop Connection window - the Parallels copy of Windows is running completely inside an OSX window. The Windows taskbar is at the bottom of the window, etc.

What were the plans with dealing with the millions of other Americans who've lost their jobs in this last recession?

Oh, that's right, there were no plans. All those people were expected to figure it out for themselves.

I'd suggest that those who's careers are based on maintaining our military can file for unemployment and search the want ads just like everybody else.

So your solution to our money problems is to throw more people onto the unemployment dole.

I'm all for cutting the military budget but drastic cuts will hurt more than help.

When did we stop doing sane things in this country?

Steve looks unhealthy. He's not as sharp as he used to be. His keynotes were flawless. He stuttered several times, forgot what he was saying in mid sentence, and handed a considerable amount of the keynote to other people. Steve was a control freak in past WWDC keynotes.

I think he may be in not-so-good health. But I've said that before.

He might be a little under the weather, but he'll be fine. If you go back and watch the video from the WWDC '05 he looked totally out of place; dressed in all black and very little energy. It's a fluxional phenomenon with his appearance. WWDC '05 he looked terrible, Apple Special Event #1(Intel iMac & iPod Nano) he looked great, Apple Special Event #2 (iPod Video) he looked great, Macworkd '06 he looked fine, Apple Special Event #3(iPod HiFi announcement) he looked like he had just woke up.

The one thing to remember is that this is a Developer's Conference so there is not going to be a lot of pizazz with flashy announcements. There was not a whole lot of new mind-blowing things announced so he could have been a little bit bored with it.

No matter what, with the transition to Intel chips complete now Apple can start devoting more time to truly new designs and hardware.

Has anyone considered that apple might not be realeasing the wide screen super secret video ipod because it dosn't exist?

lets all think for a second...

    1) touch screens are weak, soft, and matte, not iPod at all
    2) they get printy and scratched very easily
    3) they would go through oodles of batter power
    4) Apple would not make the thing bigger just to hold the extra battery
    5) battery life would STINK
    6) touch screen starts to complicate the interface, goes against apple's easy as pie rule
    7) the thing would have to cost a fortune

Logic has no place on the internet ;)

But seriously that is a good post, it's similar to points others have brought up during the last few months.

    http://images.macrumors.com/im/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/04/next-ipad-to-offer-3d-display/)

RCR Wireless (http://unplugged.rcrwireless.com/index.php/20110503/devices/8804/hot-rumor-apple-ipad-3-to-be-fully-3d/) claims to have multiple sources telling it that Apple is planing on incorporating 3D technology ino the next generation iPad. “The fact that the iPad 3 is 3D is a dead cert,” one Hollywood insider close to the big movie studios told RCR, adding that the screen would be the real magic. She went on to say that the big film studios were currently running around like blue arsed flies trying to gear up to release plenty of 3D content in time for Apple’s next launch.Besides this "Hollywood insider", they also cite sources from iPad manufacturer Foxconn about the 3D plans.

We're not sure about the reliability of these sources, but Apple has clearly been exploring 3D technology over the years as evidenced by numerous (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/12/11/apple-exploring-3d-desktop-and-application-interfaces/) patent (http://www.macrumors.com/2008/03/20/apple-researching-3d-stereoscopic-displays/) applications (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/12/17/apple-working-on-3d-hyper-reality-displays/). Not all this research has been in the typical 3D technology found in recent movies and television sets. Some of the research has been in pseudo-3D technologies that involve head tracking that was effectively demoed (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/11/head-tracking-allows-glasses-free-3d-on-ipad/) in a recent iPad app. 3D, of course, has also been a big recent trend with the release of many 3D TVs, 3D movies, and Nintendo's 3DS handheld gaming console.

Also interesting is that this isn't the first time this has been suggested. Earlier this year, Japanese blog Macotakara (http://www.macotakara.jp/blog/index.php?ID=11085) cited their own sources who said that Apple's LCD supplier was beginning to manufacture small glasses-free 3D LCD panels for the iPod Touch, though they suggested it might involve user head-tracking to accomplish the effect..

Amazing, how many half-wits are out there!

There is a larger issue in Hewitt's statement, which seems to totally go over some people's heads.

And to the "Facebook sucks" crowd: may be so, but there are a lot more Facebook users, than iPhone users. So it's still important.

And really, over the last few years, my otherwise beloved Apple has turned into the George W. Bush of PC companies. Look at their newly found moral stance, regarding applications. Or their strong-arm tactics. Or the picking of wars not likely to be in their own interest - like the ones with Google, and Adobe.

Or, the fact, that the truly religious (and uninformed), blindly follow, no matter where.

very well put. it's the human condition commercialised. if only apple could step back and see itself for what it has become aside from very rich.

Ok, so its going to be called imovie. So we're gonna have 2 imovies, how confusing., will it be a seperate software or will it built into itunes, personally i think that itunes should be music only, then programs and films and vodcasts in a separate application called imovie, Itunes is too clogged up.

...Actually it's the smug attitude of so many Mac owners that makes them such satisfying targets. You reap what you sow. I've been using Macs since 1984 (and PCs about as long) and Mac users get on my nerves sometimes.

    Um, hello?

You've been using Macs since their inception, therefore you are a Mac user, who is according to you a smug and satisfying target.

Maybe, not all Mac users are the same monolithic group.

How comes Walmart control so much of the US retail market, yet everyone here hates them and refuses to shop there? They might not be ethical, they might bully suppliers, they might put small stores out of business but they keep prices down and everyone wants to pay less for everything.

Its similar with Tesco in the UK, they might not be as dominant as Walmart in the US but they aren't that far off it. The subject that normally comes up in the UK is the prices the supermarkets pay to farmers. Everyone says its shocking and that they are bullying the farmers, yet everyone is more than happy to pay less and less for farm produce.

I don't see how what Walmart does or says about this really matters. They ain't going to stop selling dvds as they won't want to lose the profit, if it gets to the point where they're not making enough profit they will just drop them on the spot. More likely is that they will use it as a bargaining chip to get better prices on dvds so they can increase profits further.

I can't see it being an issue in the UK, or the rest of the EU. The monopoly and competition rules of the EU are pretty strict and they don't give a damn how big the company is - Bill Gates will testify to this, I think Microsoft had been fined about $500million the last time I checked for breaking the rules on competition.

I only used Madoff as an example as to how 65 Billion could easily just get squandered and disappear. The Government crooks seem not to get caught as easily as him.

As for flip flopping Canada and the US ... I think both countries are similar as to how our Governments waste money.

IMO the answer to our countries sinking financially rests with reckless spending and the answer is not drastically cutting the big services like Military, Education, Healthcare and such.

There is too much Government feeding at the trough on both sides of the border.

Ok I don't mean any offense, but everything you're saying is completely anecdotal. You are suggesting that 1.4 trillion in wasteful spending is somehow hiding in the government budget, but you have absolutely zero proof to back this claim up. It's a little silly really.

Because you made a post that claimed our editing skills have nothing to do with creativiy or experience, but simply that 'knowing the software' is the only advangate we have.

That's not how I understood what he said at all,he put "professional" in quotes because he was being sarcastic,to me he meant that if someone is worried about the fact that more people can now operate a software because it's simpler to use/more affordable then they must not be a real pro because a real pro wouldn't worry about such things, they know that they have the creativity and experience that sets them appart.
