I am professional editor. I get paid to edit. I just dont edit giant films. I think there is a little discrediting going on for what makes a professional editor.......A good editor is a good editor, it is an art. Just because someone is an "expert" on AVID, PP, FCP doesnt mean they are an good editor. Same as someone who knows how to put paint on canvas isnt necessarily Van Gogh.
I think this version will help us tell stories easier and more efficient. It is still up to the editor what he/she will do with the tool.

    Amen!

i may be wrong (and don't flame me if i am,) but it seems like the 6G ipod should make its way to the shelves instead of an updated 5G. the 5G has been out for almost a year , hasn't it?
Bring on an iPhone/iPod instead. The iPhone is looong overdue.

Unfortunately not. This extremely tired and overworked theoretical man cannot ask his boss, because the freelance work conflicts with the corporate work. He also just uses photoshop. He's looked for cheaper tools - really wants to love pixelmator, but it just falls too short, and doesn't offer the compatibility he needs to work with his colleagues. He'd love to buy an older version of the suite - CS3 would be fine - if he could find it at a reasonable price, which he can't.

This guy - like I imagine many other "pirates" - isn't a bad guy. He WANTS to buy it, but it's tough to swallow that kind of an asking price. One day soon, when he can afford to, he'll pay the price. He just can't right now.

Look, anyone can make up stories to try to prove a point. You won't change my mind and I still think your over emotional made-up scenario is pure bunk to try to tug at the strings of the heart. My empathy meter is barely reaching up to "couldn't care less" levels. The people who "pirate" Creative Suite are talentless hacks who probably pirate it for the sake of saying they have it (hoarders, what most software pirates are), not to use it in any meaningful way.

I stick by my gross over-generalization which makes anyone saying they will pirate it not matter at all in the grand scheme of things and should not be something to get worked up about like the initial post I was responding to was doing. Just ignore the people who think Adobe's prices are outrageous, they are what they are because they sell the best tools and anyone who can take those tools to make something worthwhile doesn't give a damn about the price.

...the rest of the industry has been mired in a slump reportedly due in no small part to a shift in consumer interest to new media tablets dominated by Apple's iPad.

Over a year ago there were a lot of crazy kooks laughing at me for saying the desktop and laptops were "yesterday's" designs. That people wanted true portability...

    There's the proof.

Once the iPad becomes beefy enough to be like a laptop (and it's getting close already), it will take over most of the computer sales. It's perfect in most ways for most people--just needs higher res, more memory, more connectivity, and stronger procession.

Cheers - I'd forgotten about Halo Wars; I haven't played that. Does that include the 'first contact' between humans & Covenant?
No, the events that take place during that game are after battle has already started. "First Contact" and the start of the Human/Covenant war happened 6 years earlier than the events of Halo Wars, which in turn is about 20 years before Reach and the following games.

    First Contact = 2525
    Halo Wars = 2531
    Reach/CE/2/ODST/3 = 2552
Also I read that Reach may not be the last Halo game. Is the world visible at the end of the Halo 3 cinematics a hint to another game, or just 'keeping their options open'?
Well, Reach was the last Halo game that Bungie are going to make, but you can pretty much guarantee that MS (the owners of the Halo IP) are going to keep it going for as long as they can. It's a cash cow, and a big company like that loves cash cows. Frank O'Connor, one of the writers/creative directors of the Halo universe and games, talked about the ending of Halo 3 at Comic-Con this year. When asked if we would ever find out what happened to Chief and Cortana, he said, and I quote....
We'd have to be the world's biggest a**holes to not follow through on a cliffhanger like that .... we certainly haven't seen the last of the Master Chief.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sUVQuyRHY4#t=4m50s

Given that the planet seems to be of Forerunner origin, and there being a new series of books based around the Forerunners coming early next year, I'm going with that as the basis of "Halo 4", whatever/whenever that happens.

Actually a super light notebook without an optical drive is exactly what I'm looking for! Remove that device and Apple should be able to provide a super thin machine with a relatively large & wide screen. Going a bit further they could put most of OS/X on Flash or EPROM of some sort with a small 1.8 inch drive for user data. It should be fairly easy to accomplish this under two pounds, though I would go heavier if the screen could be made 15" wide.

I'm motivated by the One Laptop per Child program. Not that I like the program but some of the concepts embodied in the laptop are very compelling. First; the laptops are solid state so no heavy fragile optical drive t worry about. Second; the idea of pervasive use of networking and the related concepts really need to be explored in a main stream OS. MacOS/X is a good platform for systems reliant upon networking. Third; a rugged machine, something the MacBooks use to accel at.

The reality is if you really need a Optical drive, that need can be easily taken care of with a USB device. When needed, it isn't something to carry around with your self constantly.

It should be reasonable to get the thickness of the machine down to about 3/4". This without an optical drive and at least part of the OS stored to Flash. The biggest items you will end up with are the processor cooling hardware and a magnetic drive for frequently accessed or user data.

Now I don't see Apple delivering this at this moment in time. It is pretty obvious that the current stock of MacBooks need a refresh. When they come though what will they be called, if they are significantly thinner they are no longer Books. Maybe the arrangement will be a folding tablet.

    Dave

Apple will never make a laptop that is that size because it would mean that they would have to take out the optical drive and make the computer ultimately worthless without a docking station. Apple will never make a computer that isn't fully capable from the start.

I wouldn't be shocked if WalMart were telling studios don't sell to Apple. The ethics of Walmart have never been in question: they don't have any.

The thing that sticks out in this article, if it's true and it is the Post so...., is that Apple is paying $4.51 more for a movie than it can sell it for. Does this make any sense? The iTunes Store is not like Walmart where you can pick up prepackaged meat, cookies and Preparation H while you're getting a movie. Is it because Steve makes money either way? I would think the idea of selling movies is to make a profit on them. And if Walmart is ALWAYS the low price does that mean new movies will be less than iTunes?

Also, if this story is true I wonder how well Walmart will fare in receiving their shipments of new iPods for Xmas. I saw them at Target yesterday. I wonder if Walmart's got any yet.

    Hal

I also think that whoever has the remaining rights to this material realise that its shelf-life is almost up. In 5-10 years time, the broad appeal of much of this material may have less relevance to the average consumer and its perceived market-value may be far less.

That's not a comment on the merits of The Beatles' music; just my view based on many of the comments I read by what I am assuming are younger music listeners.

I'm 43, many of these songs are ingrained into my memory from childhood, but the only Beatles albums I would possibly be interested in are maybe 2-4 remastered CDs; I'm not interested in downloads at all. But to be honest, I don't feel that by not currently owning them that my music collection is lacking at all.

I don't know about that. I'm young and I love the Beatles. They may decrease in popularity, but I don't expect them to go away ever. Also, it is still quite common for popular artists to cover Beatles songs. Just do a search for some songs on iTunes.

Beethoven and Mozart aren't the most popular artists on the charts today, but their music is still very well known and loved. I expect the Beatles to be known and loved in 100 years. Practically everybody would recognize the opening of Beethoven's fifth, even if they didn't know it was the fifth or that it was written by Beethoven. The Beatles may not reach that level, but their music will be around. They are the most popular artists of this century.

I don't get it - if Wal-mart doesn't sell something does that mean no-one will buy it - at all? Just go elsewhere to get what you want.

Disclaimer: I am not defending Wal-Mart I think they have some very poor business practices and I rarely shop there.

In rural America a lot of the time there is not other choice than Wal-Mart. I know people that drive 40 miles to get to a town that has a Wal-Mart to do all their shopping. It would be over 100 miles to get to a city with a BestBuy or some other store that sells DVDs. For a lot of people, if they don't have it at Wal-Mart, it doesnt exist. I know this is sad but it is true.

I know Wal-Mart has a lot of bad practices, they treat their employees like crap, kill small companies that cant meet there supply requirements, etc. But, just a reminder, they are (for the most part) operating WITHIN THE LAW. So if you really disagree with what Wal-Mart does, you should contact your legislator and ask them to support laws that curtail these activities or contact your local district attorney's office if you think they are breaking the law.

I doubt it. The $129 upgrades were back in the era before the iOS platform took off. The iPhone, and iPad are really accelerating Apple's income and profits, so they don't need to price OS upgrades that high. Snow Leopard brought a bunch of new tech to the table for developers to play with, and $29 was the easy way to ensure most people had that tech. Apple is likely much more interested in moving the platform forward then they are with $100 extra from each person. The more people stay current, the more developers can actually use the latest toys. Also consider that for Intel 10.4 users, the "$29 upgrade" worked fine, even though Apple could have blocked that and forced it to be a Leopard only upgrade.

Notice how Apple moved away from paid iOS upgrades for iPod Touch users. They saw enough people hold back that it was going to be an issue with the apps in the App Store. Now iPod users get their updates for free.

I'm going to predict $29 for Lion, with an option to even just grab it from the App Store like how they distributed it to developers. Possibly even a little cheaper off the App Store, and $29 for the in store disc based copy.I guess we'll see.

I always wonder what people do to their Windows 7 installs to make them crash.

On my desktop: I've put my windows 7 install through a lot but had to reinstall it around two months ago when my tweaking of WMP went awry. No biggie, boots up REALLY quickly thanks to 2 SSDs in RAID0. Nothing strange to report... also uses an ASUS motherboard, which has.. been through a lot to say the least. All of it was my own doing (overclocking-related...), but it hangs in there.

My laptop: ASUS U43J, revision X. Best laptop I've ever owned. 10 hour battery life (with wifi on), NVidia 310m, Optimus technology, 4 GB ram, windows 7 64 bit. Absolutely a wonderful experience.

I wonder if Apple would ever consider using ASUS motherboards.

Usually one person will get in a tank and if he is able to take out the other tank theres no real way to stop them.
4 or 5 Sniper shots will destroy a tank. 2 or 3 if you are precise and can hit either the driver compartment, or the exhaust vent. Just FYI.

But also, you will only have to deal with that for a about another week. The October update to playlists and maps is coming next week, and the Tank is being swapped for a Wraith, along with a host of other fixes and tweaks that people have noticed in this first couple weeks of playing.

I really hope Apple makes some changes, anyone who has developed or listren to developers knows what a stupid process this is to get an app approved.

What will actually make developers happy? Free run? I respect Apple's right to try to keep their platform within the guidelines that the determine. Apple isn't perfect but the Facebook developer did the right thing... He tucked his tail between his legs and ran... It's cool when people give up. (sarcasm intended) He's a developer, he's gonna deal with different platforms with different rules ALL THE TIME! Soon the internet will start "locking down," then what will he do? I think the Facebook app could be a lot better, I'm not claiming to be able to code it and what-not but the apps shortcomings can't be all linked to Apple's approval process. That's what I think this developer should have focused on: making the app as amazingly good as possible within the "confinements" that are in place.
